Who We Are
 |
Grace
Community Church is the new name of the historic First Baptist
Church of Marblehead. Although "gathered" in 1810, we have
undergone a remarkable metamorphosis over the past few years. This
began after it became apparent that our personality and vision had
changed. As a result we felt it necessary to rethink who we are and
why we are here. The results of this process led to the following
actions: |
● The decision to change in the Church’s governance from congregational to
elder leadership.
● The decision to revise the Church’s membership policy to allow for those who
have been baptized in a way that was not traditionally Baptist to join.
● The decision to withdraw our affiliation from the American Baptist Churches,
USA, a denomination of which we had been associated with for more than a
century.
The most recent step in this metamorphosis was to change our name to better
reflect who we are. Since most parishioners come from a background other than
Baptist it was obvious we had become more of an interdenominational church and
wanted the Church’s name to reflect that reality.
As of Easter 2005, the Church officially became Grace Community Church. But in
order to avoid a very complex situation, our legal name will remain First
Baptist Church of Marblehead. Though our commitment to Jesus Christ and the
Bible has not changed, we have decided to relegate some of those sticky
secondary issues of the faith to being a matter for each believer’s conscience.
Subsequently, our passion is to simply introduce men and women to a personal
relationship with God through faith in Jesus Christ and help them grow in their
faith by helping them better understand God’s Word, the Bible, and grow
in their relationship with other believers.
If this sounds
like a community of faith that interests you, we would love to meet you. Come
see for yourself what God is doing here. Or you may contact us by mail, fax,
e-mail or phone.
